Interview with Jan, one of the most inspiring DN I ever met5 min read

People always ask me what I consider the best thing about being a digital nomad? After travelling around, visiting many new places and exploring new cultures I came to the conclusion, that what I like the most about being a DN is meeting new and inspiring people. People that you can talk to for hours and there is still so much to discuss. People who make you laugh, but also make you think about life and all its shadows. One of these amazing, inspiring people that I met while travelling was Jan, 59 years old gentleman from Netherlands.

I met Jan accidentally, I was in a pub with a group of nomads and one guy from the group started to talk to Jan´s friend. Since I am quite talkative person I started to talk to Jan and discovered he is cool, nice and funny person that I like to hang out with.

After a few hours of talking, a few drinks and a few table football matches, I decided that I would love to share Jan´s ideas, opinions and thoughts with all of you and so I decided to ask him a couple of questions that you can find below 🙂 .

Jan, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your lifestyle?

I’m working and travelling. Or: I’m working and living in the nicest places on earth.

Since I sold my house and car in Netherlands at the end of 2018, a few weeks after, on February 3rd 2019 I started to travel. I celebrated last week my 1 year of travelling!

During the first 9 months I travelled through South America and some weeks through the north-west of Spain. After 2 weeks in my house in Hungary in October I decided to go to Málaga. I spend very nice months in Málaga during Christmas time and New Year.

After this three months in Málaga I want to hit the road again.

What is your current destination and what you are planning next?

My destination is now my house in Tiszaszentimre in Hungary for some weeks. After that I want to go to Cape Town in South Africa. This plan is instead of Bali where I wanted to go, but due to the corona-crises I don´t want to go to Asia now.

What do you like the most about travelling and working remotely?

I like to have new experiences. New environments, new people. I have to continue my work, but can enjoy the places where I’m living!

Is there something that you do not like about this lifestyle?

Hmmmm. There is nothing I don´t like. The nicest part of this life is that if I don’t like something, I can change it. So for me there is nothing that I do not like.

What is a place/country you liked the most while travelling and why?

I liked Colombia a lot : to be, to see, to feel. I was in the north-west of Spain and inspired me a lot, such nice cities and an awesome environment!

Málaga is for me the unique place and I can imagine to live there as soon as I will give up my nomad lifestyle. I want to settle down there.

Are you going to coworking spaces while you travel/work remotely?

Yes! For me that’s the best. Otherwise I would be all the time in my apartment and meeting nobody for the whole day or the whole week. A visit of the supermarket would be then the most exciting part of the day.

In case you do, would you like to recommend us a certain space?

In the early beginning of my travel I met a lady in Uruguay and I spent the first 9 months of my travel together with her. We travelled a lot together. Because of this it was not necessary to look for coworking spaces. The Living Room was the first coworking space I ever visited and I really can recommend it. It feels like a family. Sooooo nice!

On my next destination in Cape Town (and later this year in Bali) I will go to local coworking spaces again.

Let´s talk about community. From all these places you visited, is there a special place that you particularly liked because of community?

The only place I have been in a coworking community was Malaga. I lived 6 months in Montevideo, but I was living there with a local family, so the life there was different. However, it was an amazing experience, I enjoyed everyday life in Uruguay.

Jan, can you tell us what is your biggest dream, in case you do have one?

Yes. To be honest: I want to meet a new partner in life and travel together. I’m not made to live a life alone. I like to share the nice things in life.
